IMPHAL, May 16: The watchman of Botanical Garden of PY College at Heijanglok (Leingang) under Moirang police station in Bishnupur district died allegedly after being beaten up by two persons who were under the influence of alcohol.

Wareppam Shyamkesho, 50, son of Jarmo, a resident of Sunusiphai Mayai Leikai, was seriously wounded after he was brutally thrashed by two persons who were having drink with him at the Botanical Garden of PY College and later succumbed to his injuries at Shija Hospitals, Langol.

He had left home May 13 around 9am for the botanical garden at Heijanglok, family sources said. They said a group of 15 local residents including members of the family went to the garden to find him as he did not return home till 8 pm that night.

The mobile phone of Shyamkesho rang when one of his family members made several calls to him as they approached the garden, but he never picked up the phone. But the mobile changed to the switch off mode when they arrived at the garden, they said.

The locals and his family searched for him for several hours, but Shyamkesho was never found and as such they left the garden around 1:30 am the next day. However, when they returned to the garden the same day to search for him, Shyamkesho was found lying unconscious at a hillock inside the garden. Both his hands were tied from behind using his shirt.

They said he was not at the spot where he was found the next day.  His mobile phone was found lying about two metres away from him. There were more than 45 missed calls on his phone. A bag filled with vegetables along with a knife was also found near the spot he was lying unconscious, they added.

He was rushed to Bishnupur Hospital and later referred to RIMS here, and from there he was again shifted to JNIMS, Porompat, but again, he was brought to Raj Polyclinic, North AOC  where he had a CT Scan test and later brought to Shija Hospitals for surgery just after midnight yesterday. However, he succumbed to his injuries at around 6:30 am there on Wednesday.

According to Haopu, son of Heijanglok village chief Jamkhoi, Shyamkesho had drinks with two unidentified men at the botanical garden on May 13 around 5:30 pm and they heard yelling sounds at around 7 pm, but nobody tried to go and see what was happening there as the villagers thought they were heavily drunk.

Haopu was picked up by police yesterday and interrogated regarding the incident. A case has been registered with the Moirang police station in connection with the incident.

The police have established the identities of the duo involved in the incident occurred at the botanical garden. They are Mona and Letjang, both residents of Lonphai village under Moirang police station.

The body of Shyamkesho has been handed over to the family after conducting autopsy at RIMS. The body had several cuts, apparently due to severe beatings.
