Will upgrade prisons to modern status: Gaikhangam

IMPHAL, May 2: Manipur Home Minister Gaikhangam said all jails in the state would be upgraded to modern status and the Manipur Sajiwa Jail and Manipur Central Jail would be initiated first to that end.

This was announced by the Home Minister while speaking to the media on the sidelines of his inspection visit to the Sajiwa Jail and Manipur Central jail yesterday.

He also said necessary infrastructures in both the prisons would be developed and that he would try to provide assistance to the prisoners under the provisions of the government.

Training centres would also be established to provide vocational training to the prisoners while serving their terms, and efforts would be made to make them available sport items including first rate drinking water, Gaikhangam further assured.

The state government is planning to accommodate all the NSA detainees at the High Security Jail being constructed at Sajiwa and steps would also be taken up to make it a high security zone by installing equipments like CCTV, the Home Minister further added.

During the inspection visit, the Home Minister was accompanied by the state Principal secretary (Home), ADGP/IG, Prison and other top police officials.
