AMUCO all set to observe Unity Day

IMPHAL, June 16: The historic June 18, the day when 18 people sacrificed their lives in the struggle to safeguard the territorial integrity of Manipur will be observed this year like the past one decade.

The day will be observed as “Unity Day” by AMUCO, while the UCM as “The Great June Uprising Day.” People will pay floral tributes to the martyrs at Kekrupat under the aegis of AMUCO and later it will also organize a public meeting at the Thangmeiband Thau ground as part of the observance.

The 11th Unity Day function will be presided over by AMUCO president KT Rahaman and a host of eminent social activists will also attend it as presidium members.

The All Manipur Clubs Organization today gave financial aid to the next of kin of all the martyrs and who were left handicapped during the uprising of June 18, 2001.

AMUCO handed over Rs 5000 each to Ksh Goldi, daughter of Ksh Romeo (martyr) of Singjamei Kshetri Leikai, L Gulsan, son of L Rajkumar (martyr) and S Sobita who has become a handicapped during the uprising at a function held at its office premises, Kwakeithel in Imphal, a statement said.

At the event, AMUCO President KT Rahman said the unprompted uprising of the people after the Bangkok Declaration of June 14, 2001 wherein the government of India and NSCN-IM signed a ceasefire agreement which said ‘without territorial limits’ has once again strengthened the firm stance of the people to safeguard the territorial integrity of the state.

He also said the people will remember the martyrs forever and that the financial aid was given to their sons and daughters as well as to the physically disabled as a mark of respect to them.
