IMPHAL, June 30: Continuing with its agitation demanding regulation of the Inner Line Permit, ILP system in the state, the Federation of Regional Indigenous Societies, FREINDS, in collaboration with the Planning & Progressive Committee, PPC and Naharol Sintha Kanglup, NSK organized a sit in protest at the Wangkhei Keithel Asangbi Multi-purpose community Hall.
Congress MLA, Elangbam Chand Singh who is also the local MLA took part in demonstration.
Speaking to media persons on the sideline of the demonstration, a senior citizen demonstrator said that the ILP was first regulated during 1873 by the British India while Manipur was a separate country.
He elaborated that the original draft of Article 10 of Merger Agreement clearly mentions that the transfer of land should be restricted in favour of the bonafide inhabitant of Manipur but later it was removed.
ILP is not an act but a regulation which can be passed by the Home Minister of India and it is still intact in the NE states of Mizoram, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh, he elaborated.
The sit in protest was also attended by representatives several other civil bodies.
Meanwhile, under the same theme ‘Save Manipur’, the Singjamei Keithel Nupi Lup also carried out a sit in protest at the Singjamei Bridge today.
A woman demonstrator said a large number of migrants continue to pour into the state which needs to be controlled at the earliest.
She further said that the migrants should not be allowed to cast votes in the state elections and appealed the state Assembly to pass the regulation in its current session.
