IMPHAL, July 23: A hand grenade was found today in the residence of Moirangthem (o) Sorojini Devi of Uchekon this early morning around 3:30am. Sources said, Sorojini is an aspiring Pradhan candidate of the Uchekon Nongpok Gram Panchayat.
The bomb was found lying in the courtyard by a family member. After the Irilbung Police was informed a police team arrived and picked up the grenade at around 7am.
Sorojini’s husband M Sarat said that after his wife announced her candidature, there had been a monetary demand of Rs 30 lakhs from a militant outfit. He however did not specify the name of the outfit.
He also informed that some ten days back, locals had nabbed a man and a woman while trying to deliver a monetary demand to the family. The two were later handed over to the Porompat PS.
Meanwhile, decrying the bomb attack, meira paibis of five different localities of the area and family members staged a sit in protest at the Uchekon Khunou community hall.
Speaking to media persons, a woman demonstrator decried bomb attacks in residential areas. While condemning the threatening of the general public for money, she urged the concern to clarify at the earliest.
The people want peace in the state, another lamented before urging not to repeat such acts in the future.
