IMPHAL, July 3: Locals of 10 Kanglatombi Zilla Parishad today expressed their objection to the abolition of the Zilla Parishad by staging sit in protest at different places today.
The demonstrations were held under the aegis of the Gurkha Welfare Union and panchayat bodies of the area.
It may be mentioned here that the state government had recently approved the abolition of the Kanglatombi Zilla Parishad.
The Kanglatombi Zilla Parishad has five Gram Panchayats out of which 10/24 Kanglatombi Gram Panchayat has been included in 7 Khurkhul Zilla Parishad while the remaining four gram panchayats including 10/25 Koubru Leikha GP, 10/26 Toribari GP, 10/27 Kalapahar and 10/28 Santolabari Paisai has been included in the Kangpokpi Autonomous District Council.
Sit in protest demonstrations were held at Charehazare, Kalapahar and Kanglatombi. The Charehazare demonstration attracted more than thousands of localites, however the other two demonstrations were not as well attended as at Charhazare. There were around a hundred protestors each at the two sites.
Speaking to media persons at the Charhazare demonstration, the Gurkha Welfare Union president, RB Chapagain said the Guwahti High Court had instructed the state government to hold election of the Zilla Parishad before June 2010 as its verdict regarding a case between the government of Manipur and certain sections of the Nepali community of the Zilla Parishad.
He continued that after the expiry of the stipulated time for the election, the state authority had instituted a case for review of the judgement of the High Court.
He added that the government notification regarding the abolition of the Zilla Parishad and inclusion of the 10/24 Kanglatombi Gram Panchayat in the 7 Khurkhul Zilla Parishad.
In case the government fails to bring any positive solution to the issue by July 10, the union will start various forms of agitations including total bandh along the national highways.
Meanwhile, he has further said that the recent ADC elections were completely ignored by the locals.
He said the District Council Act 1971 under Clause 2 (M) is not acceptable to the Nepali community because it does not fulfill the political privileges and safeguard of their customs, traditions and other aspirations.
