Rice quota held up at Jiribam following threat

IMPHAL, July 26: Following threats from an underground faction, police commandos stationed at Jiribam have today taken up tight security measures around a goods train carrying rice meant for Manipur, according to police sources.

Police said, about 3 days back a youth claiming to be an operative of the KCP (KK Nganba) group came to the FCI office located at Dibong, Jiribam and threatened the officials there not to allow the unloading of rice from the goods train to the Manipur bound trucks.

The youth also gave the FCI officials 2 mobile numbers to report any eventuality, the report adds.

Police further said, as soon as the said goods train having 22 fully loaded wagons arrived at the Jiribam Railway station at around 10.30 am today another youth claiming to be an operative of the KCP group followed up the threat.

Each wagon has a carrying capacity of 700 fifty kg rice bags.

Meanwhile, about 70 trucks are stationed at Jiribam for ferrying the rice meant for the state.

Reports further said, despite the security measures a problem cropped up when it was found out that loading cards issued by the Railways were missing and as such the trucks could not be loaded with the rice from the train. After queries with the railways, the rice may be unloaded tomorrow.
