London Olympics: Vijay Kumar of India wins silver medal in 25m rapid fire pistol

India today clinched their first Silver medal in the London Olympics. Pistol Shooter Vijay Kumar finished second in the 25 metres Rapid Fire Pistol event with a score of thirty. This is India’s second medal in the London Olympics. Earlier, shooter Gagan Narang won a Bronze in Men’s 10 metre Air Rifle event.

The Gold in today’s 25 metres Rapid Fire Pistol event was clinched by Cuba’s Leuris Pupo with a score of 34. The Bronze went to China.

Meanwhile, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has announced cash award of one crore rupees to Silver Medal winner Vijay Kumar. The Chief Minister said that the state government will honour him with Himachal Gaurav Praskar on 15th August, 2012.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Defence Minister A K Antony have congratulated the Indian shooter for winning a silver medal at the London Olympic Games.
In his message, the Prime Minister said that he joins the nation in congratulating shooter Vijay Kumar for winning Olympic silver medal in the 25 metre Rapid Fire Pistol event.
Antony also congratulated Vijay for winning the silver medal in the 25 metres Rapid Fire Pistol event at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London. In his message, the Minister said the defence forces are poud of him.
Army chief Bikram Singh and the deputy chief Lt Gen Ramesh Halgali also praised the shooter BJP also congratulated Kumar for his success and achievement. The Party’s chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said that it is a moment of pride for the nation.
An ecstatic father of Vijay Kumar attributed his son’s Olympic success to the years of hard work and discipline inculcated in him by the Indian Army.
