Chandigarh to institute Spl investigation

IMPHAL, September 1: Chandigarh state government will institute a special police team to investigate the death of Pangambam Ravi, whose corpse was found mutilated at Khudalahore jungle on August 29.

Principal Secretary (Home), Dr J Suresh Babu and additional DGP, LM Khoutae landed at Chandigarh airport today following instructions from home minister Gaikhangam. The intimation to send the officials was made formally to chief secretary DS Poonia yesterday by the minister. It may be mentioned that four officials inclusive of the mentioned are presently at Delhi on State official duty.

Dr Suresh Babu and LM Khoute today met Chandigarh DGP and principal secretary (Home) and SP of CID crime branch at Chandigarh State Guest House.

Later, the family members of Pangambam Ravi who are presently at Chandigarh to carry out his last rites were intimated by Chandigarh police to arrive at Sukna Lake Guest House where the Manipuri officials are put up for discussing the matter and to take adequate actions in the issue. The family members inclusive of Ravi’s father, Pangambam Sangaai, Romen and Ranjan went to the mentioned place and intimated their grievances to the visiting state officials and for taking up an independent investigation by the CBI.

The matter was deliberated amongst the Chandigarh officials and the two visiting State officials at length.

Afterwards, assurance was given by the Chandigarh top executives that a special team comprising of Police sleuths will be set up to investigate the matter thoroughly and to award befitting punishment if a guilty party is found.

The Manipuri officials also requested their Chandigarh counterparts to take up necessary measures for safeguarding the interest of the northeastern students. Further, the post mortem report has been handed over to the family members. A compact disc which contained the video graphic recording of recovery of the dead body was also given.

In the meantime, the JAC of Pangabam Ravi in a press release stated that the body could not be brought back to Manipur due to the being in a decomposing manner, the last rites were performed at Chandigarh after the post mortem has been conducted. It further said that the case should be handed over to the CBI and the responsible should be booked within a span of 5 days, failing which protests will be launched by the JAC. It also appealed the public and other civil organizations to support the stance.
