JIRIBAM, September 19: The only branch of the United Bank of India at Jiribam was today closed following militant threats.

The bank was closed this noon after following a telephonic threat to the bank authorities to close down the bank regarding a monetary demand.

The bank had opened from 10 am this morning for normal transaction, however militants threatened that customers could be hurt if the bank was not closed down immediately.

The bank branch is located just 100 meters east of the Jiribam Police station along the National Highway 37 and guarded by Manipur Rifles personnel.

A customer of the bank urged all concerned not to make such threats on the bank which does not even have enough man power.

Mention may be made that on September 17, representatives of the ALL Jiribam United Club Association, AJUCA, All Jiribam Meira Paibee, AJMP, Jiri Ima Meira Paibee Apunba Lup, JIMPAL, WAKAK and FRIENDS president and general secretary had met with UBI regional officials at the office of the AJMP.

The meeting had also resolved to urge militants to withdraw its monetary demand made to the bank considering the plight of the Jiribam residents.
