Person with disabilities seeks school in the hills

IMPHAL, Sept 2 : All Tribal Disables` Union Manipur, ATDUM has appealed the concerned authority, the government to facilitate and help the physically challenged persons from the tribal community by constructing and availing them a school and hostel facility.

In a statement issued to the press, Momo Tantanga the president of the union stated there are nearly 6000 tribal physically challenged persons in the hill districts of Manipur and further expressed the immediate need for constructing an appropriate place for study at any of the hill districts of Manipur.

The statement further pointed out that the union has submitted a memorandum to Education minister on 19 June earlier this year to construct a school and a hostel for them in any of the hill district, since there is only one of it`s kind in the state located at Takyelpat which is exclusively for blind, deaf and mute persons and not for locomotor disabilities, LD.

It may be mentioned, as per the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participation) Act 1995, it is stated that there should be a special school to set up in government and private sector for those in need of special educations and there is provision for free education till he/she attains the age of 18 years and there is also provision in the Rights to Free & Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
