IMPHAL, October 18: A book entitled ‘Quaternary Studies of Manipur’ was released today by the Vice Chancellor Prof H Nandakumar Sharma today at a simple function held at the conference hall of the Economics Department, MU.

The path-breaking book was written by Dr Thokchom Angou Singh, a renowned archaeologist of Manipur and it was based on his doctoral thesis.

Complimenting Dr Thokchom Angou on his painstaking research and its results Professor Nandakumar said, the book outlines the environmental changes which Manipur had undergone through the ages since the time the valley of Manipur first emerged out of the sea.

He marvelled at the feat of Dr Angou and his work, the achievement of one single scholar performing a multi-disciplinary research.

Dr Laishram Kunjeshori Devi of MU History Department spoke on the book.

Dr Thokchom recalled how he conducted his research by travelling to places as far as Tumuyon near Kangpokpi and Singda on his cycle to collect soil and stone samples and how friends used to joke that he is a real patriot as he has soil and rocks from all corners of the state in his room.

He said, research is not an easy task and one has face and overcome odds which come in the way to succeed. He was basically a student of Maths but he had to master other branches of science like botany, zoology, geology, physics and chemistry for the research.

Prof Amar Yumnam, Dean of Social Sciences and Director of Centre for Manipur Studies presided over the function.
