AR picks up student leader

IMPHAL, November 10: A team Assam Rifles, Chingarel post today briefly detained a student leader by charging him of trying to lift a vehicle, charged the Students’ Welfare Association of Kangleipak, SWAK today.

Addressing a press conference today at its office today, the student body alleged that a team of army personnel tried to pick up the finance secretary of the Standard College, Kongba identified as Md Nasir uddin by charging him of trying to lift a Honda Activa moped at Palace gate.

While condemning the alleged act, SWAK, secretary general, Aribam Jankinath said the Assam Rifles should be along the border areas and with AFSPA lifted from the seven segments of the Imphal Municipality, it has no authority whatsoever in the municipal areas.

He further lamented that the state police remained as mute spectators even though it was under its jurisdiction while the Assam Rifles had no authority over the incident.

He further appealed to the security forces to understand their jurisdictions and try not to intrude into the state police’s jurisdiction.

The press conference was also attended by Standard College, finance secretary Md Nasir uddin, 20, son of Md Habbir bullah of Urup Awang Leikai a BA 1st semester student.

Speaking to media persons, he said the incident happened this afternoon at around 1:30pm.

Narrating the incident before media persons, he said, he had come to Palace Gate to buy books accompanied by a friend, whom he identified as Syutwarish son of Abdul Mallik of Urup Awang Leikai.

The two had come on Syutwarish’s Honda Activa.

According to Md Nasir uddin, while, Syutwarish had gone inside the bazar area, he stayed behind near the Honda Activa.

All of a sudden a man wearing a helmet arrived and charged him of trying to lift his Honda Activa.

He continued that when he told the man that it was not his vehicle but the man continued to check the chassis number of the vehicle.

Even after it was confirmed that the vehicle was not his, the man called someone on his mobile, he said.

Soon after a team of the Assam Rifles arrived and arrested him and took him along with them to their post.

On the way to the post, the AR team also confronted him to declare that he was the owner of certain things. The AR however did not specify about what the things are but threatened him that he will only be released if he accepts it.

He was released only after the Palace Gate bazar vendors arrested the man who had informed the AR team and made him call the AR team, he said.
