Civil society engagement consultation

IMPHAL, November 21: The Human Rights Alert, Manipur University, United Voluntary Youth Council, Wada Na Tor Abhiyan and WinG jointly organized a regional consultation for Civil Society Engagement with the Post 2015 UN Development Agenda at theCourt Room, VC Secretariat, Administrative Block, Manipur University today.

The consultation was attended by Manipur University VC, HN K Sharma as chief guest, Social Sciences Dean, Manipur University Professor Amar Yumnam as president.

HRA executive director, Babloo Loitongbam said in the year 2000, several heads of state of developed countries had gathered at the United Nations hq from September 6-8 to discuss the development and creation of a more peaceful and prosperous world. The summit was known as the ‘Millennium summit’.

He continued that during the summit, the state heads released a ‘Millennium Declaration’ containing eight points which all state heads resolved to meet before the end of 2015.

Even though it is 2012, none of the eight points have been achieved so far, he added.

He elaborated that the eight points include amongst others the pledge to bring down the population of extreme poverty in the world to half, provision of primary education to all, access to basic health care for all and equal status for both men and women.

He continued that there is a need for public and civil societies’ participation in the next World Development Agenda meeting which is likely to be held after 2015.

He further said, the next meeting will be attended by state heads of several developing countries for which five principles have already been chalked out.

He said similar consultations had already been held at various locations of the state.

On November 27-28, a national consultation on the same issue will be held at the national capital.

A strategy paper on development issues of the NE region will be submitted tomorrow for the national consultation to be held at New Delhi, he said.
