IMPHAL, December 14: The Meetei Eyek Erol Loinasillon Apunba Lup (MEELAL) organized a meeting on inclusion of foreign words in Manipuri language at Manipur Press Club today.
The meeting resolved to form a committee named Meeteilon Chaokhathanba Apunba Lup to analyse Meeteilon, remove foreign words added to it, and submit the finalized language to the experts committee of the government.
The presidium members who attended the said meeting were History department, Manipur University HOD, Prof L Kunjeshori, MEELAL advisor, Tokpam Thawailemba, MEELAL president Shadokpam Tomba Mangang, All Manipur Working Journalist Union, president A Mobi and Joint Director, language cell of NCERT, M Mahabir.
AMWJU president A Mobi also released a book entitled“Natonsang amasung peisa pambi” in Meetei Mayek written by Angom Shusila Chanu while Prof L Kunjeshori released a map of mainland Southeast Asia in 1832 which was published by WADA.
M Mahabir urged the people of the state to support MEELAL in its efforts to make Meeteilon an outstanding language.
Sometimes we ignorantly degrade the language while trying to enrich it, he said and continued inclusion of foreign words in a living language might result in the extinction of the language.
He then said that Manipuri language can be a media of education.
It can be studied up to graduation level for which text books are needed to be prepared. Terminologies of different subjects are also needed to be prepared in Meeteilon, he said.
