LAMKA/IMPHAL, January 16: The Churachandpur District Student Union (CDSU), a major constituent body of the All Tribal Student Union, Manipur (ATSUM), has in a press release made it clear that they will abide by the decision of ATSUM regarding the general strike call by the latter from the midnight of January 18.

“CDSU feels that the demand of  ATSUM is legitimate, just and is convinced that the appeal of the tribal under the egis of ATSUM had been time and again ignored by the Govt of Manipur. In view of all this development, the CDSU appeal to the general public to support the general strike/ bandh so that justice will be done to the genuine demand of the tribal of Manipur and retaliate that CDSU will co-operate and use all its resource in support of the general strike/bandh called by ATSUM,” the release said.

Meanwhile, the Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS) in a press release has also said that it will extend full support to the proposed 24-hour total bandh imposed in Manipur by the All Tribal Student’s Union Manipur (ATSUM) with effect from January 18 midnight.

The release said it endorsed the charter of demands put forth by the ATSUM as “it is a just cause for the rights and interests of tribals in Manipur”, before adding, “It is very unfortunate that the other student’s bodies have opposed to the initiative of ATSUM”.

In addition, the TKS has in its release reminded the state government for immediate consideration of including BEd as mandatory criteria for intending candidates for the next TET examination slated for April 2013.

“Several tribal students could not avail the opportunity to study Bed course as all the educational institutions are situated in the valley. To add to the situation, the DIET centre in all the district headquarters remained non-functional till date,” it said.
