CPI demands transparency in Governtment-NSCN (IM) talks

IMPHAL, January 13: With the rising speculations of the government of India announcing a solution to the Indo-NSCN (IM) issue before the Nagaland state General Assembly, the Communist Party of India resolved during its two day National Executive Committee meeting to demand the Centre to be transparent on the issue of peace negotiation between the government of India and the NSCN (IM).

The two day meeting was held at the party’s office at Bhagabati Bhavan, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha on January 11 and 12 and was attended by 31 politburo members of the party’s National Executive Council and presided over by Punjab CPI secretary Dr Jogendra Singh Dayal.

From the Northeastern states, there were one representative each from Assam and Manipur. CPI state council secretary Dr M Nara represented the state. Speaking to IFP, Dr M Nara said after his return to the state that he had placed before the meeting the issues confronting the state following which, the meeting decided to put certain demands before the Centre on the issues.

“During the meeting it was resolved to demand that the settlement of the Naga insurgency issue without making any provocation to the other neighbouring states of the North East, particularly Manipur is welcome”.

“But so far the bipartite talks and negotiations between the government of India and the NSCN (IM) seem to have doubtful propositions and as such inclusion of the Manipur government in the dialogue process becomes an urgent necessity in order to create a confidence in the minds of the people”, he quoted the resolution of the party national meeting.

“The state CPI secretary further informed that the resolutions also included that “While making all these efforts for a lasting solution it is also noticed that influx of many lakhs of outsiders inside the territory of Manipur without valid documents has created a very high social tension amongst the different ethnic groups of people living in Manipur”.

And as such the meeting had resolved that “Therefore, the National Executive Committee of CPI demands the Union government to consider the unanimous decision of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to introduce and implement an appropriate law that will prevent unlawful entry of outsiders into Manipur and regulate the peaceful co-existence of different groups of people together”, he said.
