IMPHAL, March 3: Irom Sharmila, who has been on fast for about 12 years demanding the repeal of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) was today taken to New Delhi from Imphal.
An official team led by an Assistant Jailor was escorted from Tulihal Airport to New Delhi on an Air India flight in the afternoon.
Irom Sharmila will be produced before the court of the Metropolitan Magistrate No 6 at Patiala House Court Complex of New Delhi tomorrow at around 10 a.m.
In a brief statement to the media, she said, “I will continue with the fast-unto death agitation over the demand for AFSPA, 1958 to be repealed from Manipur. ”
Irom Sharmila will reportedly be put up at the Manipur Bhavan located at 2 – Sardar patel Marg, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi along with the officials escorting her from Imphal to New Delhi.
Sharmila is in Delhi to appear before a court in connection with a fast she undertook over the repeal of the controversial act. Sources say she will demand that the case should be transferred to Manipur.
Irom Sharmila is to appear before the court under IPC 309 (attempt to commit suicide) for fasting at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
When she arrived at Manipur Bhavan, supporters belonging to Manipur including various print and electronic media persons stormed the Bhavan at around 8 pm. to meet her. But the official team escorting her from Imphal made them meet her at their request after she has had her rest for a while after her flight hours.
