LAMKA, April 10: A mechanic identified as Jawajit alias Nanao (24), son of Samu a resident of Khumujamba Meetei Leikai died of suffocation while repairing a water pump inside a 38 feet deep well at Zion Street, Lamka today around 1pm.
Nanao and a friend Roshan were repairing the water pump inside the well when Nanao died due to suspected carbon monoxide inhalation while his friend Roshan managed to escape.
Roshan was in a semi-conscious state when he was taken out of the well, said a witness.
Rescue works were delayed for about an hour due to certain problems which many suspect could have resulted in the death of Nanao.
Witnesses said that the fire brigade team of CCpur arrived at the incident after being apprised of the incident.
A personnel of the team, Manga Gaga went down but his oxygen supply malfunctioned and he had to come up and go back in for a second time in an effort to save Nanao who had been inside the well for more than an hour by the time his body was fished out from the well.
