Explosions marred I-Day celebration in Imphal

    IMPHAL, August 16: In spite of all the security measures taken up by the police, two bombs exploded in Imphal on Independence Day.

    However, no serious damage or casualty was reported in the blasts.

    The first explosion occurred at a road side at Moirangkhom near Heecham Yaicham Pat, along National Highway 2, which is around 250 metres away from 1st Manipur Rifle ground where the main Independence Day function of the state was held.

    The blast occurred at around 8:15 am, only some 45 minutes prior to the commencement of the function.

    Right after the explosion, a large number of police force surrounded and conducted searched operations in the surrounding areas.

    Altogether, 17 people were picked up by the police and handed over to Imphal police station for proper verification.

    Meanwhile, the second blast occurred at around 4:05 pm in front of the DIC office, a few meters away from the Imphal East police station.
