Palace take-over protest turns 40 days old

IMPHAL, August 1: Yumjao Lairembi Meira Paibi, Hodam Leirak along with the All Manipur Anti-Drug Association organized the 40th meeting against the state government’s decision to take over the Manipur Royal Palace today.

Protest demonstrations against the government decision have been continuing at the Royal Palace ever since June 23 a day after the state cabinet had resolved to acquire the Royal Palace and its surrounding area covering around 12-13 acres. Each day a different body organizes the day’s meeting and demonstration.

Meanwhile, today’s meeting was joined by around 50 individuals.

Speaking to this IFP reporter Laishram (o) Mangita, secy Yumjao Leirembi Meira Paibis appealed to the state government to withdraw its decision regarding the Royal Palace.

She expressed that the govt instead of trying to take over the palace should turn its attention towards the present drug menace and the ever increasing crimes against women and children which have hit the state hard.

M Padamani Leima, president AMADA said that if the government decision is not withdrawn at the earliest, AMADA along with other like-minded organizations will intensify the agitation against the govt.

She further said that the royal palace should be kept as it is and not as a museum.
