Disabled woman raped, claims father

IMPHAL, October 15: The father of a 22-year-old differently-abled woman has alleged that his daughter was raped on October 11 by a relative when she was alone at their home.

Meanwhile, following the revelation made by the woman in front of village elders, the accused was arrested by a team of Heingang police station yesterday.

The father identified the accused as Laishram Joykumar, 41, son of Tomba of Khundrakpam Awang Leikai and at present staying at Tangkham Awang Leikai. He is reportedly working as a teacher in a private school.

The accused is related to the victim from his mother’s side. He is said to be married man with three children.

The father further claimed that the medical report furnished by the RIMS Forensic Department has confirmed rape.

A media team, accompanied by members of the All Manipur Disabled Women Organization, All Manipur United Handicap Organizations, today visited the family of the woman and talked to the father.

Elaborating on the incident, the father bemoaned that the accused has been staying in the neighbourhood for more than 20 years now and is related to them.

He said the incident came to light only after his daughter complained of stomach pain on October 12.

She revealed her ordeal after her mother questioned her, the father continued. The incident had happened when all other family members other than his daughter was inside the house, he said.

The victim was rushed to the JNIMS from where she was referred to the Forensic Medicine Department at RIMS where a medical examination was conducted. Later, the report confirmed that she was raped, the father stated still gripped by the trauma.

Afterwards, the accused was arrested by a team of Heingang Police yesterday evening, he said.

Meanwhile, the mother has also demanded befitting punishment for the accused.

The Manipur Disabled Women Organization has in the meantime condemned the incident and demanded befitting punishment for the accused as well. She said a memorandum will be submitted to the state Chief Minister and all concern at the earliest.

The organization will also conduct various forms of agitations by joining hands with other organizations, unless the government punishes the culprit, she added.
