Manipur Loumi Lup announces sit in at Jantar Mantar

IMPHAL, November 2: More than 400 members and volunteers of the Manipur Loumi Lup will staged a sit-in-protest at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital on December 11 and submit a memorandum on the several issues confronting the state to the Prime Minister.

Addressing media persons during a press conference at the Irabot Bhawan today, president of the lup L Mangi said the protest will be supported by the All India Kishan Sheva.

He said that the memorandum will apprise the Prime Minister on the issues confronting the state at present.

The Khuga Multipurpose project constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 335.11 crore, which UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had commissioned on November 12, 2010 is yet to be fully functional, he said while adding that the memorandum will demand a CBI enquiry on the misuse of funds meant for the project.

He said as promised during the initial stage of the project, the farmers of the state should get sufficient water from the project.

The memorandum will also demand re-modernization of the five projects which after being announced as complete are yet to function properly, he said while adding that the projects are Khoupum Dam, Loktak Lift Irrigation, Singda Dam, Sekmai Barrages and Imphal barrage.

He said the memorandum will also demand an enquiry regarding the misuse of funds meant for cleaning of Loktak Lake and compensation for the farmers of Loktak lake areas whose farms have remained partly submerged for the past 30 years.

The memorandum to the PM will also highlight the problem of National Highway 37 and issues related to its maintenance, and proper highway security forces along the two lifelines of the state NH 37 and NH 2, he said.

It will also demand the implementation of ILP in the state and touch the subjects of old age pension, potable water for both hills and valley and implementation of comprehensive crop policy.
