UKHRUL, December 12: In view of the coming Christmas festival, the Ukhrul Traffic Police Department is gearing up to beat traffic conundrum in the town over the season.

With each passing day, the christians` biggest festival is drawing closer and the preparations for it are now on a festive footing. It is such time of the year that the district is yet again begining to witness flocking of more and more people from both nearby and far-off villages to the town`s market to make their purchase for the festival.

Consequently, the town areas particularly, the main road has become chock-a-block with shoppers and traffic and the district traffic police are having a tough time discharging their obligations to bring the chaotic traffic situation under control.

In an interaction with this reporter in this connection, Second OC, Ukhrul Traffic Police, L. Barnabas has disclosed that to make the traffic conditions more manageable, they have enforced certain traffic regulations in the town.

According to Barnabas, heavy vehicles have been restricted entry into the town area from 8 am in the morning till 4 pm in the evening, while all roadside vendors have been asked to shift their businesses from the foot path and crowded areas to give space to the growing number of pedestrians.

“We have also asked all passenger buses to use their own parking space provided at Awontang, off the main town,” he said.

However, the lack of parking space for light vehicles is posing a pressing problem and this has led to haphazard parking on the edge of the already congested main road.

Expressing helplessness of the traffic police in this, Barbnabas pleaded, “We would like our DC to look into the matter and make early necessary arrangements to create parking space for these vehicles as well.”
