MK Binodini, an icon to Manipuris: CM


IMPHAL, February 6: The 2nd MK Binodini Devi Memorial Lecture was organized today at Chandrakirti Auditorium, Palace Compound jointly organized by the Department of Art and Culture and the Maharaja Kumari Binodini Devi Memorial Foundation.

Addressing the gathering, chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh said that the late MK Binodini Devi had devoted her precious life in working for the people

She has become an icon for the people of the state, he observed. She has left behind a legacy to the people of Manipur for generation to preserve, protect, promote, develop a legacy to relish and get rich dividends.

Her works are well-known and recognised all over the country, the chief minister said before adding that the effort of the foundation is a fitting tribute to her.

The chief minister continued that the efforts made by the Maharaja Kumari Binodini Devi Memorial Foundation will only help in enriching the literature of the state.

“I am glad that AribamSyam Sharma who has a long, deep personal and artistic association with MK Binodini has edited a book and Chongtham Kamala, the acclaimed singer who turned many of them into greatly loved classics of modern Manipuri music, who are the two best people for the job have taken the onerous responsibility in bringing out this precious book. I hope their efforts will enrich our literature, performing arts enormously,”, the CM said.

During the function floral tributes were offered to a portrait of the late Imasi and a book titled “Isei Binodinigi” was released.

Urvashi Butalia who is co-founder of ‘Kali for Women’, India’s first feminist publishing house and currently director of Zubaan, an imprint of Kali delivered a lecture on “Dismantling the Master’s House: New Genres in Women’s Writing.”

Artistes of Roop Raga presented songs penned by MK Binodini and renowned actors of Manipur Yengkhom Roma and Narendra Ningomba also performed Karna Kunti Sangbad by Rabindranath Tagore translated by MK Binodini Devi which was concepted and designed by Padmashri Ratan Thiyam.
