Victims in 150 crimes in Delhi from NE during last three years


IMPHAL, February 25: There were 150 instances of crimes committed in the national capital during the last three years when the victims had been people from the North Eastern states.

This was stated by state deputy chief minister, Gaikhangam during the second day of the 7th session of the 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly.

He was replying to a Calling Attention Motion moved by opposition MLAs Th Shyamkumar Singh and RK Imo Singh, which was converted into a “Short Duration Discussion.”

Continuing with his reply he said in the past such incidents were not as frequent as now.

And since the frequency of these incidents has increased, the issue is turning towards “Racial discrimination,” he said.

In case the issue is not checked in time, it could grow bigger, he said.

In the past year 2011, there were 5249 crimes cases in the capital city of which there were 27 cases where the victims were from the North East, he continued.

In 2012, there were altogether 60367 crime cases in Delhi of which there were 50 cases where the victims were from the North East states and in 2013 there were 86564 crime cases of which there were 73 cases where the victims had been from Manipur and other North Eastern states, he said.

Delhi is somewhat becoming a “heaven of criminals” and before it is too late, steps need to be taken up, he observed.

He further said that the incidents need to be properly monitored and a committee has been constituted to check reoccurrence of such incidents.

NEC member Barua is the chairman of the committee which has six members.

Retd IAS officer P Bharat Singh from Manipur is also a  member of the committee, he said.
