Police foils public rally at Jiribam

JIRIBAM, April 30: Just after few days of conciliation between communities in finding all possible ways to end the dispute following Boroikhal incident, the Zeliangrong community has today organised protest rally at Jiribam displaying the banner which reads as “Rally against Attempt to Murder to Innocent Students at Lamkhai Jiribam on 13th April, 2013”.

The protest rally was started at 11 am from Hill Cross English School which is located at Kamaranga, Jiribam Sorok Atingbi.

The rally was organised by Zeliangrong Students’ Union, Jiri Area and participated by the students and women of the community.

When it was progressing towards Jiribam market centre, a team of police has barricaded the rally at Lamlong Keithel, at a distance of half kilometre from the starting point, on the ground that Cr PC 144 has been imposed in the subdivision in connection with just concluded 16th Lok Sabha election. On receiving the news, additional state forces of IRB and Commandoes were soon rushed to the spot.

There was face-off between the protestors and the police as the protestors insisted that they would carry on the rally despite imposing Cr PC 144 following which the police have started firing tear gas and blank live rounds in an attempt to disperse the protesters.

In the mean time, the ADC of the subdivision Dr Hermit Singh Pahuja arrived on the scene. The ADC unconditionally urged the protestors to come at his office to discuss the matter with him and also asked them to submit memorandum, if any, to the government of Manipur through him following which the protest rally was discontinued there; and started talking between ADC and few of Zeliangrong leaders. While the talk was going on, the protestors were waiting at the point until the talk came to an end.

Later on, the protestors dispersed in the evening after having finished the talk.

While interacting with a leader who attended the talk with AC, he averred that the ADC has assured that the culprits who involved in the April 13 physical assault to the Zeliangrong students will be booked as soon as possible.

He further mentioned that the Zeliangrong team has placed a condition to ADC that if the assurance is not translated into action, more strong agitation will be launched accordingly.
