Water scarcity is a myth for Ningthoukhong

BISHNUPUR, April 30: While Manipur is facing acute shortage of water, abundance of drinking water has been provided to the residence of Ningthoukhong of Bishnupur district under Accelerated Urban Water Supply Scheme which was commissioned in 2006. This Water Supply Scheme has been managed by an NGO – Progressive Front (PF), Ningthoukhong since 2012 which was management by its earlier Committee. This NGO has managed the distribution of water supply to all the households of the 14 wards of the township.

Domestic and irrigational water are distributed through Moirang Low Canal and Imphal Main Canal for the benefit of the consumers.

The president, Nungsibabu said to this IFP correspondent that the condition of the three km long Ningthoukhong River was once a garbage dumping area in 2012 when PF took over the charge of managing the water supply scheme.

PF cleaned it up, did necessary dredging and started distribution water since then, the secretary continued and further added that PF has rendered the service with the help of the IFCD, local MLA Govindas Konthoujam and the corporation of the local people.

He also mentioned that the people of the state should not expect everything from the government; there are responsibilities that the general public should also shoulder.

He stated that by supporting the existing schemes that are provided by the government some of the necessities could be met easily.

He also mentioned that instead of expressing grievances to the government, it is sometimes better to the benefits by giving corporation to the government.

During the interaction, he narrated one incident of facing acute shortage of water. This was when some locals could not find water to take bath after attending a cremation service.

The PF took the initiative of fetching water in a tanker. From the on there was no looking back for the PF.

During the interaction with the correspondent, it was also mentioned that out of the 7 water pump sets of the Ningthoukhong IFCD Pump House No 1, 5 water pump sets are out of order, Nungsibabu informed.

He also mentioned that the 2 pump sets, which are operational now were made operational from the 7 pump sets which are out of order by engaging a mechanic by the PF.

Nungsibabu also told that as water treatment demands some cost, there is plan to distribute potable water to Toupokpi and Upokpi as the water supply schemes of these area are not working since the last many year.

It is notable that CRFP, BSF, NHPC, GR and district police collect their daily requirement of water totaling of around 25 tankers of 10000 litres each from the supply scheme.
