IED recovered behind Raj Bhavan


IMPHAL May 14: An improvised explosive device (IED) bomb weighing around 1.4 kilograms was found lying in a vacant plot along the Governor Road by a CRPF patrolling team on Wednesday.

A woman street vendor selling edible items on a road-side vendor found the IED bomb lying in a vacant plot owned by one Pamei Ninglun on the back side of the Raj Bhavan, Governor Road. She informed a patrolling team of CRPF, posted as security guards in the Raj Bhavan around 8.45 am, who were on patrolling duty along the road after which the team inspected the plastic bomb with the help of a Sniffer dog.

As a safety measure, the Governor road was blocked by a police team and later a team of state bomb experts arrived at the spot. On inspecting the plastic bag, they found a remote- controlled IED along with wires attached to the bomb and two detonators.

High ranking officials of the state police and the CRPF rushed to the spot and inspected the area where the IED bomb was found. Normal traffic resumed along the road after the defusing of the bomb.

Meanwhile, unidentified youths suspected to be militants riding a two-wheeler moped hurled a Chinese hand grenade at the residence of a Special Engineer, Command Area Development Authority (CADA), around 11.45 am in Kwakeithel Heinoukhong Nembi Thokchom Leikai under Singjamei Police Station.

According to the family members who were present at the spot, the incident occurred around 11.45 am when an unidentified youth who arrived in a red Honda Activa along with an accomplice opened the gate of Special Engineer Thokchom Kesho, 65, son of (L) Ghambhir of Heinoukhong Nembi Thokchom Leikai and hurled a Chinese hand grenade while two children were playing carrom in the verandah. The accomplice remain seated on the two wheeler keeping the engine on and the two made good their escape after committing the dastardly act.

The family of the Special Engineer later informed the Police about the bomb and a team of state bomb experts arrived and picked up the bomb. However, the hand grenade was found to be missing a detonator by the state’s bomb experts’ team.

A sit-in-protest was staged by the residents of the area to protest against the bomb threat at the residence of Th Kesho.
