Manipur CM optimistic of Sanjenthong completion before Sangai Festival

IMPHAL, May 12: Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated on Monday that pre-fabricated readymade steel will be used in constructing the Sanjenthong Bridge which is targeted to be finished before the Sangai festival during an inspection tour of the construction sites of the bridge, JNIMS Hospital and the new Secretariat building at Mantripukhri area.

The bridge should be constructed under strict quality control and is expected to be complete before the Sangai festival. The reconstruction of bridge will be done by using steel cantilevers with an estimated cost of around 32 crores, he said, adding that according to the officials, ‘the construction of the main structure is not likely to take much time but the finishing could be a problem. So, the government has urged the contractors to work in a day-night shift to meet the dateline.’

He said the contractors would ideally take one year to complete the bridge but keeping the Sangai Festival in view and the chaos which would be caused if it’s not constructed we have mounted pressure to complete it before the festival.

Constructing the basement won’t take much time as readymade pre-fabricated steel material will be used in building it, he said.

Work Minister Kh Ratankumar and other high officials accompanied the Chief Minister during his inspection visits.

According to an official, the materials going to be used in constructing the bridge will be imported from Kolkata and a huge pillar will be installed in the middle of the Imphal River by a Kolkata-based company.

As a part of the inspection, the Chief Minister inspected the main block, boys’ hostel, auditorium hall and aggregated hall of the JNIMS hospital.

The whole construction works will be completed before the MCI team’s visit to the state which is scheduled every year in February, the official added.

Later, the CM visited the construction site of the new secretariat building at Mantripukhari. This construction is also targeted to be finished before the next financial year.
