Heirok locals protest lack of water supply

THOUBAL, December 1: Locals of Heirok Part II area today staged a sit in protest against the failure of the concerned authorities to provide potable water in their area for more than 15 years now.

The protestors also warned of serious agitation in case the authorities failed to provide drinking water within a week.

The said area falls under the Assembly constituency of State Education and Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution minister Moirangthem Okendro Singh.

Locals lamented that although they have submitted numerous memoranda to the authorities concerned, there has been no positive response till date.

The sit in protest was jointly organised by the Fine Society, Heirok and CISDO Club, Heirok at the premise of the club.

Protestors held placards reading `We want tap water from Heirok Bazar to Laimayum,` `Water is the soul of human,` etc.

According to a protestor, although the locality has been facing severe water problems for such a long time, no one has come to look into the issue.

She said there had been times when a litre of water would cost them Rs 130.

Water from the Heirok River cannot be used as it is much polluted she added.

She appealed to the concerned authorities to provide safe drinking water to them and quench their thirst.
