Prosecution witness identifies main accused in Lungnila murder case

IMPHAL, December 8: A prosecution witness in the sensational Lungnila Elizabeth murder case identified the main accused Th Nando Singh who was standing inside the courtroom during a trial along with two other accused, including one who is out on bail today.

The session trial of the case had been continuing ever since the Central Bureau of Investigation submitted a charge-sheet in the case on December 28, 2007. Session trial no 14/13/53 of 2013 was conducted at court room of District and Session Judge/ Manipur West K Brajakumar Sharma today.

During his deposition in the case today, prosecution witness no 50 submitted a six-page long statement and at the same time identified main accused Th Nando Singh alias Nanao from among three accused during their physical appearance before the judge.

The other two accused produced today are Letkhosei Haokip alias James Kuki who is presently lodged in the Sajiwa Central jail and another accused who is out on bail.

The deposition of the prosecution witness was made under Provision of Oath Act, 1969 (Act 44 of 1969). There are altogether 74 prosecution witnesses of which 50 have deposed (recording deposition) before the court.

It may be mentioned that the Lamphel Police had first registered a case regarding the incident under FIR no 181 (11) 2003 LPL PS u/s 364-A, 368, 400, 302 and 384 IPC on November 12, 2003.

However, the State government had handed over the case to a Special Investigation Team on November 12, 2003 for investigation.

On January 27, 2004, the State Home department issued a notification stating that the investigation of the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Following the official notification, the CBI had registered a case (FIR no RC 5/ S/ 2004-Kol u/s 364-A/368/400/302 IPC.

The CBI was represented by special public prosecutor H Chandrajit Sharma.
