Cabinet Meeting: Manipur ADC election to be held on May 30, four dialects get recognition

IMPHAL, March 27: A State cabinet meeting held today has given its consent to hold the election of six Autonomous District Councils of the Hill districts on May 30 (Saturday).

The meeting has also given its consent to give recognition to four dialects spoken by hill tribals of the State so that they can be studied in the schools upto Class VIII.

The cabinet meeting held at the Chief Minister`™s Secretariat conference room at 3 pm today was chaired by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, state government`™s spokesperson, Minister Moirangthem Okendro who holds the education, CAF and PD portfolios, said the ADC election will be held on May 30 and the result of the election will be declared on June 8.

He further informed that the voting hour will be 7 am to 4:30 pm and the draft electoral roll for the election will be published on March 30.

He said in case of any changes required in the draft electoral roll should be submitted before April 13 and the final electoral roll will be published on April 20.

Public notification of the ADC election will come out as per the rule on April 30 and the last date of filing nomination for candidates is May 6 and scrutiny will be held on the following day, he informed.

The last day of withdrawing nomination paper is May 11 and if re-poll is required it will be held on June 4.

Further, counting of votes will be held on June 8 and the results will be declared to the ROs. The election processes will be completed by June 15, he added.

It may be mentioned here that a state cabinet meeting held on March 23 had already given its consent to hold the ADC election on time. Following which, State Election Commission submitted the tentative schedule of ADC election to the government.

Among the other agendas that were discussed during the cabinet meeting today, the spokesperson informed that the cabinet has also given its consent to recognize Maram, Anal, Maring and Simte dialects so that the dialects can be studied at schools unto Class VIII.

Out of the total 39 dialects spoken in the State, 13 dialects had already been given recognition to study at schools earlier.

To get recognition, a dialect has to have atleast 10,000 people who speak the dialect. There should be books, magazines, newspaper, etc written in the dialect.

According to a report of the Directorate of Language Planning and Implementation, Maram tribe has a population of around 45,255 with 35 villages; Anal tribe has a population of around 21,242 with 21 villages; Maring tribe has a population of around 23,238 with 23 villages and Simte tribe has a population of around 11,065 with 12 villages.
