IMPHAL, March 18: Anti AFSPA-1958 crusader Irom Sharmila Chanu was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West RK Memcha at Cheirap Court today at around 10:40 in the morning and was remanded to judicial custody till April 1.

She was then taken back to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, JNIMS after court formalities were over. She was remanded to further custody and was ordered to appear before the court on April 1 for further hearing.

Mention may be made that Irom Chanu Sharmila has been protest fasting against the controversial Armed Forces (Special Power) Act 1958 since November 5, 2000.

She has been charged with attempt to commit suicide under IPC 309 from the beginning of her agitation and she has been kept under judicial custody at JNIMS special security ward from the past 14 years.

Since then she has been freed and rearrested in what has become a ritual every year as no charge has ever been drawn up against her for trial.

Irom Sharmila had been released dropping all her charges twice but she was again arrested and charged with the same IPC 309, attempt to commit suicide each time.
