THOUBAL, June 15: Several sit in protests were staged today demanding that the government cannot conceal the culprits involved in the heinous crime of raping and killing Ningthoujam Rebika and they should be hanged to their deaths.
Continuing with the mass protest against the alleged rape and killing of Rebika, Friends in Need Society, Heirok Part II staged a sit in protest at a local waiting shed attended by locals from the four surrounding localities.
The protestors held placards reading `file a charge sheet at the earliest,` `Hang the rapists,` `Government should not use delaying tactics in identifying the culprits,` `Set up a fast tract court` etc.
A protestor said law has been made by the people and there is no reason for not awarding a strong punishment against a man held for committing a heinous crime against women.
The government and the public should not look down on women and killers of women should be hanged till death, she said.
Sit in protests were also staged at the TLYC Heirok Part III near the Higher Secondary School, Heirok part II crossroad, Heirok Part II Laishram Leikai, DNNYC Devi Mandop Leikai Heirok Part II, YDC heirok part III Litan Wangma, Nongpok Ningthou Panthoibi Youth Club Ingalok among others.
The protestors also declared that they will not cease their agitations until the culprits are awarded befitting punishments.
Later in the day, the protestors contributed rice, vegetables, other eatables and money and hand it over to the bereaved family of Rebika.
Meira Paibis of Ima Lamjing Lup, Wangjing Tekcham Leikai and womenfolk of Salungbam Ward No 5 also made contributions and hand the items to the bereaved family.
