UG cadres involved in extortion arrested: PRO Police

IMPHAL, June 15: Security forces have nabbed several underground cadres during separate Counter Insurgency operations conducted in different parts of the State.

According to a PRO Police statement, on June 12, a team of the Imphal West District Police Commando conducted frisking and checking in front of Samurou Machu Cinema Hall on June 12, on receipt of a reliable information about the presence of some hardcore members of the UNLF, with a view to commit prejudicial activities like extortion of money from general public, Govt. employees and recruiting of new cadres etc.

During the exercise, an active cadre of the UNLF identified as Huidrom Ajit Singh alias Langdai, 41 son of H Sharat Singh of Khagempalli Huidrom Leikai was arrested, it claimed adding that a case has been registered at Wangoi Police Station and investigation is going on.

The statement continued that the same day, a combined team of Imphal West District Police Commando and 25 Assam Rifles conducted frisking and checking at Sekmai new market and arrested a UNLF cadre namely, Yaikhom Sanaton Singh alias Ton, 35, son of Y Ningthou Singh of Nilakuthi Awang Leikai.

Investigation revealed that he and his associate Tomba had extorted money from general public and private business men and elected members in Sekmai and Maharabi area, it said.

A case has been registered at Sekmai Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.

The PRO Police statement also stated that the same day, on receipt of a specific information about the presence of some cadres of PREPAK (PRO) organisation in Sekmai and Maharabi areas to extort money from the general public, govt officials and businessmen, a combined team of Imphal West District Police Commando and 25 Assam Rifle conducted frisking and checking in front of Sekmai Koujengleima Bus Parking.

During the frisking, one active member of PREPAK (PRO) organisation, namely, Waikhom Thangal Singh, 43, son of W Khomei Singh of Khabam Lamkhai at present staying at Awang Potshangbam Khunou was arrested.

Investigation revealed that he had extorted money from Pradhan and elected members from Sekmai, general public, private businessmen and Govt. Officials etc. for raising party fund.

A case has been registered at Sekmai Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.

Meanwhile, on June 13, on receipt of a reliable information about the presence of some active workers of PULF organisation taking shelter in a house located at Paobitek Mamang Leikai area with intention to extort money from general public and Govt. employees etc. a combined team of Imphal West District Police Commando and 12 Bihar Regiment conducted cordon and search operation and arrested PULF cadre, namely, Md. Rajid Khan alias Tomba, 24, son of Md. Monohar Ali of Paobitek Mamang Leikai.

Investigation revealed that he was involved in extortion of money from innocent public at Wangoi area, and served demand letters to various Govt. employees who were residing in Paobitek area, it said.

A case has been registered at Wangoi Police Station and investigation is going on, it said.

On the other hand, according to a PRO Defence statement, troops of Red Shield Division along with Manipur Commandos of Sekmai Police outpost conducted a joint operation and apprehended two insurgents of various UG groups.

It said on June 12, two insurgents of UG group KRA (U) under umbrella organisation KNO were apprehended from Kanglatombi while they were attempting to extort money from the locals and vehicles on NH-2.

The cadres were identified as Pvt. Thanglunlal Chongloi alias Hopeson, 20, son of Tongkhulen chongloi of Kailenjang, Senapati district and Oinam Shyamsunder Singh alias Naoba, 19, son of O Manoj Singh of Charhazari, Senapati. They were both apprehended along with a point 22 Pistol and a Magazine.
