IMPHAL, June 22: The JAC formed in connection with the death of a 53-year old man in a hit and run case on June 16 morning along the National Highway 102 has imposed an indefinite Thoubal district bandh against the failure of the government to find the vehicle involved in the accident.
Laishram Sanaton of Khangabok Awang Leikai was knocked down by a vehicle believed to be a Tata Sumo near the Sorojini Oil Pump along the highway on the June 16 morning around 3:45. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Khangabok locals have been demanding the government to identify the vehicle and book the culprits involved.
Angered by the lack of response from the government and its agencies to the demand, the JAC has imposed the indefinite bandh starting today.
A mass public sit in protest was also held at the Khangabok New Market shed demanding the government to identify the vehicle and its driver at the earliest.
During the meeting, the local residents also took several resolutions in connection to the hit and run case including formation of the JAC and to imposed an indefinite bandh in the district until the government identify the vehicle or provide assurance of the same.
The meeting which was also attended by students from schools of Khangabok and its nearby areas also resolved to seek help from the student bodies of the State.
Later, locals came out to the national highway and block traffic near the Khangabok High School. Tyres were burnt and electric posts placed on the road blocking traffic.
After some time, a police team led by Thoubal addl SP M Madhunimai and Thoubal CDO OC Anandkumar arrived at the scene and tried to pacify the angry locals.
However, the people failed to listen to the police and continued with the bandh.
