BISHNUPUR, July 12: In solidarity to the demand for the introduction of Inner Line Permit System in the state in order to check the massive entry of non-locals into the state, a sit-in-protest was staged by Ishok Apunba Meira Paibi Lup at Ishok Keithel, Bishnupur district today.
Placards inscribed with slogans such as `Implement ILPS in Manipur at the earliest`™, `Save indigenous people`™, `Save Manipur`™ etc were displayed at the protest site.
During the protest demonstration, Ishok Apunba Meira Paibi Lup pledged that it will take part in different forms of agitation launched to press the government to implement ILPS in the state to safeguard its indigenous people.
Endorsing the demand, Nambol Area Apunba Meira Paibi Lup also staged a sit-in-protest during which slogans like `Resign all the MLAs for failing to implement ILPS in Manipur`™; Long live Manipur`™ etc were chanted.
The protestors also burnt effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh and Dy CM Gaikhangam.
Shortly, a team of Bishnupur District Police led by DSP (CDO) John came in and fired tear gas shell and mock bomb to disperse the protestors.
Coming out in support of the collective demand for ILPS implementation, a large number of people blocked roads at Nambol Bridge and Nambol Phoijing Keithel.
A team of police arrived and dispersed them by firing tear gas shell and mock bomb.
Rally and torch rally were also taken out at Thinungei, Thamnapokpi, Ngangkhalawai, Moirang, Saiton, Nachou and Ningthoukhong during which scuffles between the protestors and police were witnessed.
In the rally at Ningthoukhong, police resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the protestors. One of the shells fell at the residence of RK ongbi Indira, igniting fire at the house.
It is reported that Bishnupur Police snatched a camera from a 17 years old girl for clicking pictures of the rally taken out in Ningthoukhong. She has been also arrested.
