Will boycott Assembly sitting, MLA Shyamkumar warns

IMPHAL, July 8: Andro MLA Th Shyamkumar decried the death of a student demanding ILPS implementation in police firing today and said the All India Trinamool Congress will boycott the Assembly session if the government fail to seriously consider the issue during tomorrow`™s sitting of the Assembly.

Shyamkumar also demanded the State deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam who also holds the Home portfolio to step down from his post on moral grounds as the incident was his sole responsibility.

Addressing media persons at his official quarter, the AITC MLA said he will raise the ILPS issue tomorrow during the Assembly sitting and if the government fails to consider it strongly and take appropriate action against the police personnel involved in shooting the students, he will not take part in further Assembly sitting as Opposition MLA.

The involved personnel should be terminated from service and put in jail, he demanded.

If the government forces continue to kill the students in such a manner in a democratic state like India, the presence of a government would become meaningless, he observed.

The incident was due to the failure of the Home minister to properly control the State police, he said.

He said Sapam Robinhood had not committed an crime, but he was demanding for the safeguard of the indigenous people from the influx of foreigners.

Such police excesses are too much, he said.

Killing a student during a protest rally cannot be happening anywhere else, the MLA observed.

The State Home minister should advise the police to use smoke bombs and water cannons while trying to control public outcry, he continued.

How could the State authorities allow the use of bullets and rubber bullets against students, he demanded?

Police always resort to lathicharging, kicking the students, firing of bullets, rubber bullets, mock bombs and tear gas shells to control student protestors, which is unfortunate, he continued.

He claimed the government is unable to properly rule the State and such incidents are indicators of a lawless land and failed government.
