IMPHAL, January 16: The results of the urban body polls have reflected the people’s mandate and that the BJP is gaining steam while the Congress is losing, BJP Manipur president Th Chaoba claimed today.

He was referring to BJP winning 63 seats although the party had failed to win any in the last election.

He said although the Congress contested in 191 seats it managed to win only 106 seats of the total 279 seats in the 18 Municipal Councils and eight Nagar Panchayats.

Independents had emerged winners in 101 seats while the CPI and the LJP won four seats each, he said.

Speaking to media persons at his office, Chaoba said in the previous term, the Congress had won all the councils, but this time is managed to win only five namely Ningthoukhong MC, Bishnupur MC, Sugunu MC, Lilong MC and Kakching MC, while the BJP has gained majority in Mayang Imphal MC, Lamlai MC, Nambol MC, Kakching Khunou MC.

He continued of the eight Nagar Panchayats, the Congress managed to win four namely Heirok NP, Sekmai NP, Lamshang NP and Andro while the independents have won the remaining.

The Congress cannot claim this as getting stronger, Chaoba asserted.

He continued if the Congress manage to form more councils, than it meant that they are buying out the independents.

But it doesn’t make any difference, as in reality, the people has shown that it doesn’t have faith in the Congress, he said.
