Dr Ak Jhaljit denies allegations, says Herojit’s claims “motivated, concocted and baseless”

IMPHAL, January 27: Imphal West Superintendent of Police Dr Akoijam Jhalajit Singh has denied allegations made against him by Manipur Police head constable Thounaojam Herojit Singh.

Head constable Herojit had confessed before a select team of media persons including IFP that he had shot dead Chungkham Sanjit Singh in the sensational BT Road killing on orders of Akoijam Jhalajit Singh, the then Additional SP of Imphal West at the spot of the crime itself.

“I deny the allegations levelled against me by Shri Thounaojam Herojit Singh, Head Constable of Manipur, telecast/ published since 26th January 2016 in some electronic media and print media both national and local in connection with CBI cases no RCIMPH2010(S)0001 and RCIMPH2010(S)0002 as motivated, concocted and baseless,” Dr Jhaljit said in his press clarification.

“It may be mentioned that the case was investigated thoroughly by the premier investigation agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and trial of the case is now going on in the Court of Sessions Judge, Imphal West. Thus the matter being sub-judice, I will not make further statement,” he said.

According to a PTI report, the Centre today promised to look into the purported confession of a Manipur police commando that he had killed in cold blood an unarmed suspected insurgent in 2009 in an alleged fake encounter that had sparked widespread outrage in the northeast state

“I will get the information and then I can comment…Then we will look into it,” Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on a visit to Kerala, said in Thiruvananthapuram, according to the PTI report.

It also said that the Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju said the Centre has taken “cognisance” of the said reports on the purported confession.

“I was little disturbed to see this news and confession which has been reported. We have taken cognisance of this revelation and necessary steps will be taken,” Rijiju said, according to the PTI report.

Congress leader R P N Singh questioned the silence of the police commando in the matter for all these years but said it needed to be investigated if the reported confession was true, it said.

At the same time, a CNN IBN report has also said that the Home Ministry has sought a report asking for all the facts in 2009 fake encounter case.

According to the report, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) too has taken cognisance of the report and will take required action.

Probe teams would check the authenticity and decide on the next course of action, it said.

The CNN IBN report also said that the the pressure grows on government as NHRC has also sought a report on the fake encounter case.
