IMPHAL, January 29: The BJP Manipur Pradesh has demanded resignation of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh and Imphal West SP Dr AK Jhaljit in the aftermath of the recent confession before the media of Manipur Police head constable Thounaojam Herojit regarding his part in the killing of an “unarmed” militant suspect, Chungkham Sanjit on July 23, 2009, in the crowded BT Road.

Meanwhile, a team of BJP Manipur led by its president Th Chaoba today also highlighted before the party high command in New Delhi, of the development in the State following Herojit’s confession.

In a statement, BJP Manipur president Th Chaoba said the “cold-blooded killing of Ch Sanjit by the State commando has now become a national issue.”

The public, he said, is waiting for true justice and for the State to award befitting punishment to all accused involved in the killing on July 23, 2009.

Chaoba in his statement further recalled the series of events of the said day and said the accused cop Th Herojit has confessed before the media that his superior officer Dr Ak Jhaljit who was the then additional SP of Imphal West had ordered him to kill Sanjit in broad daylight.

In the light of the confession, the BJP demands Dr AK Jhaljit who is now the SP of the district to be put under suspension until the case is not closed, it said.

The statement said following the confession of the head constable, the BJP Manipur president has appealed to the Central government to constitute a fresh investigation to unfold more truth of the case.

Chaoba said that in the last 30 years around 1528 civilians of Manipur have been killed in fake encounter and all the cases are pending in the Suprime Court at present.

Of the total cases about 1200 innocent civilians were reportedly killed during the period of 2002 to 2012 under the Congress government led by CM Okram Ibobi Singh, he claimed.

Further quoting the confession made by the main accused Herojit, that he shot to kill Sanjit spraying six live rounds from his service pistol under the order of the then Additional SP Dr AK Jhaljit, Chaoba maintained that Herojit was instigated by the present SP Imphal West district to carry out the act.

He further elaborated that Herojit clearly mentioned that Chief Minister Okram Ibobi and the then DGP Yumnam Joykumar, who is now retired from service, were in the know of the things.

He said Herojit had accused Ak Jhaljit should bear the sole responsibility of the entire incident.

The release further mentioned that media reports on next day of the July 23, 2009 incident in State had reported that Opposition MLAs had raised the matter on the floor of the August House but the Chief Minister Ibobi has said “there is no other option other than to kill them.”

Underscoring the very statement of the Chief Minister, the BJP president raised his suspicion that a handful of Manipur Police commandos might have been conferred with gallantry award recommendation from the high ranking officer in connection with the incident.

A BJP delegate comprising of M Asnikumar Singh, Basanta Sharma, General Secretaries, V Hangkhalian former Minister and Saratkumar Singh also met the national BJP president, Amit Shah at around 3pm and apprise him of Herojit’s confession before media persons, of killing Ch Sanjit Singh on July 23, 2009 in cold blood under the command of his superior officers and highly responsible persons.

The team reportedly apprised Amit Shah, about the prevailing social and political issues of Manipur.

On listening the report of the issue Amit Shah assured the team that the central leadership will extend all possible help to the State and thanked the BJP team for their performance in the recent local body elections.

Amit Shah further reportedly asked the team to work harder to further strengthen the party in Manipur.

For the ensuing Imphal Municipal Corporation and State Assembly election, he directed the team to work collectively in securing maximum number of seats.

Amit Shah assured all possible assistance from national office and leadership of BJP and expressed his confidence that his party will come to power in Manipur after the state assembly election.
