Mob sets on fire house of man accused of killing neighbour

IMPHAL, January 2: A mob had, dismantled and set on fire the house and three vehicles of a person accused of killing his neighbour at Haobam Marak Chingtham Leikai under Singjamei Police Station yesterday afternoon.

The deceased is identified as Maibam Chaoba Singh, 67 and the accused as Dr Thongam Sharat Singh, son of Th Amuba Singh.

The accused is already in police custody and undergoing interrogation.

According to sources, on December 25, 2015, Dr Sharat had organised a feast at his residence for the labourers involved in the construction of his roof.

It is also learnt that Sharat had assaulted Chaoba for accidentally spilling some food which was meant for the labourers. During the assault, Chaoba suffered a head injury and was taken to the hospital but succumbed on the night of December 31 around 10, sources informed.

It is also learnt that Chaoba had recently suffered a BP stroke and had remained paralysed since then.

The news of Chaoba’s death angered the locals who came out yesterday and after destructing his house set it on fire along with two Maruti 800 cars and a Honda Activa.

Meanwhile, the locals have also formed a JAC and taken several resolutions.
