IMPHAL, January 15: At the end of the first day of counting of votes for the 18 Municipal Councils and the eight Nagar Panchayats election, the Congress has maintained a lead with 105 seats, followed by independent candidates winning 85 seats, BJP with 60 seats, LJP with 4 and CPI with 2 seats.
Counting of votes for the remaining seats will continue tommorrow.
The local body polls were held on January 11 to elect 279 councillors and 558 Ward Development Committee members from the four valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur.
Out of the 93 seats in Thoubal, independent candidates bagged 42 seats followed by INC with 35 seats and BJP with 16.
In Kakching Khunou Municipal Council which has 12 Wards, the BJP bagged six seats, followed by INC with three and independent with two.
In Kaching Municipal Council which has 12 Wards, INC bagged seven, BJP three and IND two, while in Lilong MC with nine Wards, the Congress bagged five and independent has 4, while in Thoubal MC which has 18 Wards, independent won 17 seats with Congress winning just one seat.
In Sugunu MC which has nine Wards, the Congress bagged five, while the BJP and the independents win two seats each, while in Yairipok MC having nine Wards, the Congress win four seats and the independents grabbed five seats.
In Sikhong Sekmai, independents have won four seats of the nine, while the Congress has won three seats and the BJP just two, while in Wangjing Lamding, independents have won six of the nine Wards, while the Congress has won in the remaining three.
In Heirok MC, the Congress has won six seats with the BJP winning three of the nine wards.
Counting for the Ward Development Committee members will be held tomorrow.
At Mayang Imphal Municipal Council, the BJP has won seven seats while the Congress has won two and the independents got four.
In Bishnupur district, the Congress is leading with 35 wins.
Counting of votes for Bishnupur district began at 8 am this morning at the Mini secretariat complex.
In Nambol Municipal Council, BJP bagged 11 seats while the INC bagged six and independent bagged only one, while in Ningthoukhong Municipal Council, the Congress has won 12 with the BJP winning only two.
In Oinam Nagar Panchayat, none of the national parties could open their accounts as independent candidates swept all the nine seats.
In Kumbi Municipal council, the BJP bagged two seats, independents five seats and the CPI bagged two.
In Bishnupur Municipal Council, the Congress bagged seven including an uncontested while the BJP bagged three and independents bagged two, while in the Kwakta Municipal Council, the Congress bagged four seats, the BJP two and independents three seats and in Moirang Municipal council the Congress and the BJP bagged six seats each.
Meanwhile, in Imphal East district, the BJP bagged six of the nine wards in Lamlai Municipal Council, while the Congress bagged the remaining three.
At Jiribam Municipal Council, of the 10 Wards, the Congress and independents bagged five seats each.
In Andro Nagar Panchayat, the BJP bagged three seats, while the Congress managed to win seven.
In Imphal West district which has three Municipal Councils and five Nagar Panchayats with 82 seats, the Congress has retained 24 seats, independents bagged 18 while the BJP could win only nine.
In the Lamshang Nagar Panchayat, the Congress bagged eight seats while the independent could win just one seat, while at the Sekmai Nagar Panchayat, the BJP and Independent could win one seat each, while the Congress retained the remaining.
In Lilong Nagar Panchayat (Imphal West), independents and LJP bagged four seats each while the BJP bagged one seat.
