IMPHAL, January 15: Tension erupted at the Uripok Chierap Court complex this afternoon as the accused in the January 11 journalists assault case was brought in for a court appearance.

The highly inflamed tension occurred when locals of the accused who tried to enter the court complex got into a tussle with the police barricading them.

The accused Maisnam Dujon Singh, 30, of Keisamthong Top Leirak, was produced before the CJM I/W around 2pm today and was remanded to judicial custody for 15 days.

He will be produced before the court on January 29 again.

Before the accused was brought to the court, locals from the accused’s locality had positioned themselves in front the court gate.

As soon as the police vehicle carrying the accused drove into the court, his waiting supporters attempted to rush into the court complex resulting in a tussle with the police; however, the police managed to control the tussle swiftly.

Meanwhile, supporters of the accused and some supporters of the injured journalists were denied entry.

The supporters then resorted to shouting slogans outside the court gates. Those supporting the accused shouted against the media fraternity claiming that the State media is biased and had wrongly implicated Duzon, while the other set of supporters who were locals of the injured journalists answered back that the media was not biased and that such person as Duzon who assaulted media persons should be sent to jail.
