IMPHAL, February 17: The population of the Manipuri ponies has been reduced to just 1218 population according to the last census, said Dr Th Ranadhir in his opening remark today at the inaugural function of Health camp for horses and ponies held at Kongpal Student’s Club Ground today.
The health camp was jointly organised by the Department of Animal Sciences, College of Agriculture and Directorate of Research, Central Agricultural University.
Dr Ranadhir said that the ponies are under the scanner of endangered spieces under the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations and added that scientific management approach is need of the hour to check the fast decreasing Pony population.
He said ponies in the State are more found in Imphal East and Imphal West districts but with grazing grounds depleting and vanishing, ponies are on the verge of extinction.
Advisor AMUCO KT Rahman as chief guest of the inaugural function said that concerned government department has failed to step up to save and preserve the ponies of the State. He mentioned that government instituted Pony farm located at Heingang is in failed state.
Chief Editor ISTV News Brojendro Ningomba as guest of honour expressed the issue should not be politicalised but rather people from all walks of life should join the initiative to save Manipur Ponies.
