“High time to forbid confinement of women to only household works’’

IMPHAL, February 28: Stating that women should not be confined to only household works at a time when women are bringing laurels to the State in the field of sports out-passing men, MLA of Sugnu Assembly Constituency K Ranjit called upon the people to encourage women in every field besides sports.

The MLA was addressing inauguration of premises of Social Welfare Club and felicitation of international gold medallists at Cherapur in Thoubal district today.

Speaking as chief guest, Ranjit said that gone are the days when countries tried to conquer the world with the help of weapons and arms.

He further said that it is the sports which should be used as a weapon to conquer the world and make the country proud.

Lauding the State pugilists MC Mary Kom and L Sarita who have garnered accolades across the world, the MLA noted the role of local clubs in building a strong society and nurturing youths in the field of sports.

Presiding over the function, MLA of Khangabok Constituency Okram Landhoni exhorted the people especially youths to give more emphasis in education and sports as these will lead them to success in life.

She said that sports not only keep a person fit and healthy but also help in bringing integration amongst the people.

Engaging in sports also help a person in staying far from abused drugs, the MLA maintained.

During the function, Sorokhaibam Nanao alias Manrei who clinched medals in the 2nd Subrata Classic International & National Power Lifting Championship in the 84 kg was felicitated by presenting cash reward and memento for his outstanding performance.

Coaches of the medallist N Sujata, national judge of power lifting and E Inaocha Singh, general secretary of AMBA, who is also the national coach of IBBF were also honoured.

The Social Welfare Club donated a sum of Rs 10, 000 to the Chief Minister Relief Fund meant for victims of the January 4 earthquake that shocked the State. The amount in the form of cheque was handed over to MLA Landhoni.

Councillor of Wangjing-Lamding Municipal Council Ward No 2 Sagolshem Santi Devi and several other Ward Members were present as guests of honour at the occasion.
