IMPHAL, February 26: Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam inform the House today that any police personnel found overstepping their duties or working beyond his official power should be reported to the authorities.

Gaikhangam who is also the Home minister was replying to a query raised by AITC MLA Th Shyamkumar during the Assembly sitting today.

The opposition MLA had questioned whether the police personnel checking the stone chip and sand laden trucks in the State are on orders of the Police department.

Shyamkumar appended his question by observing that if it is so then there is no need for the Forest department in the State.

He further observed that even if they are authorised to check the loaded trucks, they should issue receipts.

In his reply, the Home minister said the Manipur Police department is the only law enforcement agency under Home. The basic duties of the department and its personnel are to prevent and detect crimes, along with maintenance of law and order, he added.

However, sometimes police personnel are also engaged in checking forest goods and other purposes, he said.

Meanwhile, BJP MLA Bishwajit also questioned as to how many legal 9mm licences have been issued in the State.

He said he was informed about the presence of many unauthorised licenced 9mm pistols in the State.

In his reply, Gaikhangam clarified there are only 17 individuals with licenced 9mm guns in the State.

Licence for 9mm pistols are recommended from the Union Home Minister, while the State Home department conducts screening and verification, he said.

He further urged that any illegal guns should be reported to the State Home department so that it could take up action.
