India is considered the food factory of the globe: Dr H Rahman

IMPHAL, March 6: India with a livestock count of 512 million, 729 million poultry, 146 million tons of milk production per year and 78 billion eggs in a year is considered to be the food factory of globe, remarked DDG (Animal Science) ICAR, New Delhi Dr H Rahman.

Dr. Rahaman was speaking as chief guest in the valedictory function of the National Seminar on ‘Integrating Agri-Horticultural and Allied Research for Food and Nutritional Security in the Era of global climate disruption’.

The function organised by the ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre, Imphal, was held today at Jubilee Hall, RIMS, Lamphel.

The chief guest further said that the per annum production is projected to increase by 70% in next census.

Farmers from many parts of the nation are going through hard times with the increase in the price of fertilizer and labour cost, and many of those farmers who borrowed money and finding it impossible to pay back are even committing suicide, he lamented.

Dr Rahman mentioned that there had been no cases of farmer suicide from the NE Region of India.

He said that he finds the farming system of the region mostly integrated.

He further advocated the promotion of more indigenous breeds of livestock to have more production of original quality of milk and said that India has been successful in cloning buffalo in Haryana state at cheaper cost as compare to China.
