IMPHAL, March 1: The Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the Controversial death of N ongbi Memicha Devi has negated the claim made by the deceased’s family members in local dailies that the death was planned by her husband’s family members.

Memicha had gone out of her residence on February 22 to visit Samaram since then her whereabouts remained traceless. Later, she was found dead on February 26.

In a press release, Kh Biken Singh, convener of the JAC which formed today agreed that Memicha was found dead on February 26 but disagreed that the claim that the death was planned.

On February 22, Memicha’s husband Shyam had talked with his younger brother Ranbir on the mobile phone asking whether his wife had left or returned home which Ranbir replied that she had already left. When Shyam telephoned Memicha, she answered that she had reached Wangjing. Since then her mobile phone was switched off, he said.

The JAC convener narrated that missing of Memicha was known only after she visited her daughter Miranda at Samaram on February 23, who was staying with her relatives.

As Memicha failed to return, her daughter went to her mother’s home place at Naharup Pangong Makhong. After she remained traceless till February 24, Shyam and his brother Ranbir published the missing story in the local media on February 25, he said.

He claimed that there had been an altercation involving Memicha over financial dispute mattering property land at her mother’s home place at Kongba Pangong Thongkhong.

Suspecting foul play in the housewife’s death considering the financial dispute, he urged the concerned Investigating Officer (IO) of the case to furnish the actual post mortem report within three days and take up stringent punishment against the culprit (s).

If the post mortem report is not furnished within the set deadline then the JAC will resort to launch intense form of agitation starting from March 4, he cautioned.

He also appealed to the IO to provide CDR of Memicha’s mobile phone number to the JAC at the earliest.

It may be mentioned that the JAC was formed during a public meeting convened at Samaram Mamang Leikai Laibung today around 8 pm wherein certain resolutions regarding Memicha’s death were passed.

The meeting which was also attended by Laishram Inaocha Singh, Zilla Parishad Member of 9-Tentha and Dijen Singh, Pradhan of Samaram Gram Panchayat resolved to form the JAC in connection with the death with K Jiten Singh and Kh Biken Singh as president and convener respectively.

It also unanimously resolved to banish any villager of Samaram, who found involved in the housewife’s death.

Along with condemning the ‘’concocted’’ statement signed by one Sumila which was issued to the press following the death, the meeting further resolved to urge the Police Department to pull up all the suspects in the killing for taking statement.
